Nepal is a magical Himalayan country with an unusually diverse landscape. Eight of the world’s ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest, are found in Nepal, making it a haven for trekking, mountain biking, and hiking. The country is also known for its national wildlife parks, jungle safaris, river rafting, and its many beautiful temples and places of worship. Nepal offers visitors a mix of ancient and modern with common sites like cows walking down the streets, Buddhist monks talking on cell phones and local children playing on 1000 year-old temple ruins.

The population of Nepal is approximately 27 million people; almost half of them are under 18 years old. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, most people living on less than $1000 a year. Almost 80% of the population still makes a living from agriculture. The rate of unemployment is almost 50% and poverty levels are very rampant. Nepal’s youth is quite large, accounting for almost half of the population. Many children are orphaned, abandoned, homeless and living on the streets.

Our orphanage program, located in Lalitpur (Patan) provides children with basic necessities like education, food, shelter, health facilities, in a nurturing community environment. Our programs allow you to take part in meaningful community service work, while discovering the people, sights, smells and tastes of Nepal.

• You select your travel dates.
• Fill out the online application form or print and send it in by mail or fax.
• Submit your $120 deposit. We accept personal check, money order or Paypal in US currency.
• Email, fax or mail us a copy of your resume/CV. Since we do not know you, or your interests, we found that a resume/CV can provide enough information to allow for a successful placement.
• After review and acceptance of the application, we will email you a detailed Orientation Guide.
• Upon receiving the Orientation Guide, it is time for you to book your flights, check your passport expiration and obtain travel/medical insurance coverage. Flight arrangements are the responsibility of the volunteer, however we offer assistance with your planning.
• Email, fax or mail us your flight details and a clear copy of your passport ID page.
• Pay the balance for the program fees, due 45 days prior to your departure.
• Upon receipt of your payment, we will send your program details with the placement and accommodation information.

In order to provide you with the very best service, we require that you read our policies. At the bottom of the online application you will be required to check the box that you have read and understand the terms and conditions of volunteering with A Broader View (ABV).

• You must be 17yrs old to participate. Children accompanying their parent/legal guardian must be 12yrs old.
• Travel insurance and medical coverage is not included in the program cost. These are the responsibility of the volunteer.
• ABV is not responsible for loss of property, personal injury, illness, accident, delay or expense sustained by the volunteer while participating in our program.
• ABV and its agents are not responsible for any financial obligations or liabilities the participant may incur including damages to property, or injury to others while participating on this program.
• ABV is not responsible for the cost of extra activities (sightseeing, language class etc) incurred during the course of your program.
  Daily transportation costs are the volunteers’ responsibility, although we try to confirm accommodations within walking distance to work site or bus transportation (very cheap in each country).
• Volunteers agree to follow the laws of the host country, the policies of the community in which they volunteer, and/or the rules of the host family, failure to do so will result in the termination of your program and forfeiture of all program fees.
• A non-refundable deposit of $120 is required along with your application. Program costs paid in US dollars only. We begin the confirmation process once the deposit is received. Final payment is due 45 days prior to departure. Volunteers agree that no part of the program fee is refundable once the program has commenced.
• Cancellations must be received in writing. Cancellation 45-30 days prior to departure will result in a 50% refund (not including the deposit). No refunds are issued for cancellations received less than 30 days prior to departure.

A Broader View Volunteer – Attitudes and Activities

This outline details the rules of behavior that is expected of ABV volunteers, not only by ABV as a volunteer placement organization, but also by our Project Coordinators, the local host families and especially, the projects that we work with.
This guideline is divided into three sections:

1. General conduct
2. During the program
3. Local accommodation

ABV is dedicated to providing responsible volunteer programs. The guideline was created to help volunteers accomplish the most out of their volunteer programs in a responsible and safe manner. We aim to create a harmonious experience for all those involved. Volunteers must agree to follow the laws of the host country, the policies of the community in which they volunteer, and/or the rules of the host family, failure to do so will result in the termination of your program and forfeiture of all program fees.

General Volunteers are required to:

• Follow the rules, advice and policies set by the local Project Coordinator.
• Recognize they are representatives of ABV, and their home country and should act accordingly. Remember this is a chance to be an ambassador of your country.
• Acknowledge that possession of illegal substances is a grave violation of ABV policy, and if discovered will result in the immediate cancellation of your program. Participants are cautioned that the possession of drugs is often dealt with severe punishment by host country law enforcement.
• Travel with an open mind; be respectful to the culture and customs of the country you are volunteering in. This means practicing patience and understanding.
• Understand the alcohol consumption is not permitted in the host family, at the project site or at the local ABV offices. Responsible consumption is expected, gross misbehavior will result in the termination of your program.
• Be aware of the potential hazards of becoming involved in a sexual relationship with local people in the country which you are volunteering. (ie: HIV, STDs)
• Treat all people with respect and dignity, especially the elders of the community.
• Dress properly with regard to the local culture, as well as weather conditions. Realize what is socially acceptable in western countries, can be considered offensive in others.
• Avoid all political demonstrations and activities. Remember you are guests in the host country and subject to local laws and punishment.
• Acknowledge the program and accommodations provided are customized for you and not changeable in country without approval and consent of ABV and our Project Coordinator
• Advise the host family and Project Coordinators of weekend travel plans.

During the program:

You should be:

• PROACTIVE – Jump in and maintain a positive attitude.
• PATIENT – Life in your host country moves slower than one might be used to. Relax and enjoy the slow pace. Remember, not everything is as organized and predictable as life in the US or UK.
• FLEXIBLE – Plans change, roads get flooded, and electricity goes out. Realize that not everything goes as planned, but good intention is always there.
• CONSIDERATE – Respect those around you and be a reliable worker at the program site. Tell your host family if you will be late. Advise the Project Coordinator if you are sick and can not work.
• RESPECTFUL – Remember that the local people you are working with, side by side, do so with little or no salary. They do this work because they believe in it. There are times when you may not agree with or understand the organizations decisions or direction. Although your suggestions are always welcome, your faith, respect and consideration for their long term work and commitment is appreciated.
• FRIENDLY - In order to truly help someone you must get to know them. Do not be afraid to make friends with the local people. Smile, wave and see how fast you are welcomed into the community.
• TOLERANT – The food, the culture, the smells and the sounds will be unfamiliar to you at first. We recommend that you dive in and experience life head-on. You will be surprised at how quickly you will adapt.

Local accommodation

You must:

• Respect the policies of the community and the rules of the host family in which you are staying.
• Ask permission before inviting guest to the homestay.
• Be aware that overnight guests are not allowed.
• Respect the accommodation, and pay for any damage you may cause.
• Keep your room clean and neat. Offer to help with chores around the home.
• Not smoke or use alcohol in your accommodation.

We offer the following A Broader View international volunteering opportunities:

Child Care/Orphanages projects:
Volunteer in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Nepal, Costa Rica and India with orphan children and street kids.  As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; including feeding babies, teaching English, playing games, teaching songs, reading activities, creating arts & crafts projects and sharing your affection and attention with these wonderful children.

HIV/AIDS awareness projects:
Volunteer in Ghana, Kenya and Uganda supporting HIV/Aids organizations working in rural communities promoting health education, prevention, awareness and care. Volunteers work with grassroots local organizations that provide HIV/AIDS education and support to rural communities. The project is to advocate for women, children and families in the fight against preventable diseases as well as mobilizing communities, strengthening their capacity and using their own resources for acceptable and sustainable projects.

Education/Vocation projects:
Volunteer in Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uganda, Kenya and Ghana working in kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. As a volunteer, you will primarily assist the local staff with teaching English, math, science, geography and vocational skills such as carpentry, electronics and computer training.  TEFL certificate is not required.

Medical and Dental projects:
Volunteer in Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uganda, Kenya and Ghana at rural clinics and community hospitals. Both hands-on and observation work is available. Health care volunteer placements are open to medical professionals including doctors, dentists, nurses and EMT’s. This program is also open to nursing and medical students in all medical fields. Medical volunteers must submit a copy of their credentials or nursing certificate, or university/medical school letter verifying enrollment.

Community Development projects:
Volunteer in Uganda, Kenya and India to support women empowerment projects in the community, Volunteers needed for manual labor jobs working along side skilled and unskilled local workers.  Some tasks include building a children’s playground, footbridge, painting, renovation work at the school and farming programs. Volunteer in the Ecuadorian Amazon at a school, orphanage or ecology projects.

Conservation and Environmental projects:
Volunteer in Costa Rica or Ecuador in a National park helping tortoises or other wildlife, as well as the fauna. The main objective of this project is to rehabilitate the animals and reincorporate them back into their natural habitat. Volunteers will feed animals and clean and repair cages. In addition, they will help build new cages and improve existing facilities.
